This year, middle school math is flipping!
Mrs. Hillman has created video lectures that the students can watch at home via School Tube and Edmodo. "Students are now able to watch the videos as many times as they need to in order to understand the concepts, and if students are absent, they never miss the lecture component,” Mrs. Hillman explained.
The students seem to really like the new format. “I like it because I can stop and rewind the tape until I understand it,” said 7th grader Eric Johanning. “You can also pause and write down questions to talk about in class the next day.”
The new format gives students the opportunity to work more in-depth with material in class, instead of struggling with the traditional homework at home. They are now able to complete assignments in class individually and in groups that will allow for deeper algebraic thought.
By teaching in this way, students will have the opportunity to ask questions in class rather than wait until the following day.
How do the parents like it? “The parents are excited because the kids are excited about learning math lessons in a new, cool way,” said Mrs. Hillman.
