Welcome to the 2012-13 Physical Education/Athletic Program at OLL.  My name is Mike Fairbank and I will be the new PE Teacher/Athletic Director for OLL.  I have been in the Orlando Dioceses the past 16 years teaching at Our Saviour’s School in Cocoa Beach.

My teaching philosophy is to teach the whole child through various physical and mental games and skills and to encourage each child to participate to the best of their ability in each activity we do.  Physical fitness for a lifetime is a goal of mine.  I consider PE to be not just an important class, but a building tool for the future of your child’s health,  especially given the increased rates of childhood obesity and adult diseases now present in young children today (diabetes, heart disease).

I am an avid runner and plan on having a running/cross club at OLL this year as well.

I have been a supporter of the American Heart Association for the past 16 years at my old school, and will continue to be one at OLL.  I will host the annual Jump Rope for Heart event starting this year for your school.  It’s a great way to raise awareness, raise money for the AHA, as well as FREE PE equipment for the school.

Physical Education is offered from Pre K-8 at OLL.  We will be participating in many different activities, including locomotor skills, manipulative skills, juggling, bowling, running, jump ropes, relay races, activity stations, super stackers and team sports like soccer, volleyball, flag football, tennis, basketball, floor hockey and cross country. Along with those activities the classes will have discussions about healthy eating and living healthy lifestyles.  We will participate in the Presidential Fitness program as well.

With the inability to host home games and collect fees at the door, we need to find a way to make our Athletic program self sufficient.  I am open to parents suggestions to help make our program independent of the school’s budget.  I have experience with using a Booster Club in the past, which greatly helps support athletics.
