Philosophy:
Recognizing that each child is unique and created in God’s image, we
include a wide selection of ethnic and cultural information which is
age appropriate and which reflects the global world in which we
live.
Goals:
Learners need
*to use 21st century information skill, resources and
tools to inquire, think
critically and gain knowledge
*to draw conclusions, make informed decisions, apply knowledge to new
situations and create new knowledge.
*to share knowledge and understandings with others and participate
ethically
and productively as members of our democratic society.
*to pursue personal and aesthetic growth.
Hours of operation:
7:45-3:30 daily
Classes are scheduled weekly. Students are introduced to
genres of literature, encouraged to pursue their own interests and
develop independent reading skills. Research skills are taught
and encouraged through the use of print and non-print resources with the classroom teacher.
Important
definitions:
-
Information literacy:
the ability to interpret, assimilate and put to use
all
information that one reads, hears, sees.
-
Collaboration:
working jointly
with others or together, especially in an academic endeavor.
The goal of the media class is to produce information
literate students, and to fulfill the mission of Our Lady of Lourdes School.
To facilitate these goals there may be projects assigned during the
school year that require students to do both guided and independent
research, during school and as homework.
Sunshine State
Young Reader's Award Program
Ongoing project: Sunshine State Reader
Grades 3-6
Link:
http://myssyra.org/
Every year media specialists in Florida choose books
for this program. The titles are sorted, grades 3-5, and grades
6-8. Once a student has read 3 books at his/her level, they become
eligible to vote for their favorite title. The voting takes place
in the spring. As an encouragement to read, the media specialist
hosts a party at this time for students who have surpassed this goal
and have read at least 8 of the 15 books on the list, and have also
passed the Accelerated Reader quiz. The winners of the state voting
are announced at the annual FAME conference in October.
These titles are available in the media center, at the public
library and at local bookstores.
Information about
Accelerated Reader
This is a program to encourage reading and reading
comprehension. After reading a book a student logs on to the
computer to access the Accelerated Reader [AR] website. He/she
finds the title of the book they have read, and
signs on to take the
reading comprehension test. The tests are multiple choice and range
from 5 to 20 questions. Passing grades are 60% for the 5 and 10
question quizzes, and 70% for the 20 question quiz. The quizzes may
be taken only once, so it is important for the student to have read
the book carefully
and to take the quiz soon after reading the book.
Certificates are generated when a student has passed
certain criteria at various levels of achievement. Quizzes are
classified as Read to, Read with, and Read Independently. The
levels are:
-
Ready Reader – 5 points – any type
-
Independent Reader - 10 points – 3 books, 1.2 level or higher,
Read independently, including Read to or Read with
-
Rising Reader – 3 books, 1.6 level or higher, Read independently
-
Super Reader – 3 books, 2.0 level or higher, 1 point or more.
Read independently
-
Advanced Reader – 3 books, 3.0 level or higher, 2 points or
more.

Books are assigned points and levels through the
program. Teachers assign levels and goals for students to reach.
These goals are based on knowledge
of the student and the result of
the STAR test. This is a diagnostic quiz that students will take
early in the school year, mid-year and again at the end of the
year
as well.
