Fourth
Grade Curriculum
W Religion
Students continue to explore
Catholicism through study of Scripture. Study of sin in the world,
the Ten Commandments, Corporal and Spiritual works of Mercy, Virtues
and the love of God are studied. Through prayer, song and actions
that express their beliefs, students are called to live out their
discipleship among their peers, their families and their school and
parish communities.
Students attend Mass weekly and actively
participate in liturgies.
&Language
Arts
Reading for comprehension is an expectation of fourth grade
students. Identification of story elements, authors’ view and
purpose, fact versus opinion, main idea and supporting details and
oral and silent reading are stressed. Spelling, Phonics, Grammar,
Penmanship, and Writing are major components of the fourth grade
curriculum. The writing process is extended through rewriting and
revision. The Accelerated Reader program augments reading
comprehension and practice. Students are baseline tested to
determine their reading level. Quarter goals are set and students
read and take computer generated tests on AR books to increase their
reading comprehension.
¯Mathematics
Students
continue the study of number sense; place value, ordering,
multi-digit addition and subtraction, multiplication, division,
division with remainders, and rounding. Students explore simple
algebraic equations, measurement using standard, non-standard,
conventional and metric, area, perimeter, and volume, money, time,
and temperature. Basic probability and statistic concepts such as
predicting and verifying outcomes, constructing, interpreting and
describing pictographs, bar graphs and line graphs are also taught.
Geometry principles such as 2-3 dimensional geometry, recognizing
shapes in the real world, manipulating shapes, identifying rays,
lines (intersecting and parallel) and angles. Problem solving using
a variety of strategies is also taught.
þ Science
Students
study basic physical, biological, and earth science. Students
conduct laboratory experiments and are introduced to the Scientific
method. Participation Science Fair is mandatory in grades 3-8.
�Social
Studies
Students
study Florida state history in which the five themes of geography
are taught. Students begin with geographical attributes of Florida.
Students explore the cultural and economic results of native
American peoples, European discovery and the effects of expansion
and industrialization thereof. Skills such as interpretation of
maps, charts and graphs are taught.
Students have
morning and lunch recesses. Students in the fourth grade have
approximately 30 minutes homework every day. Daily practice of Math
and Spelling is essential. Occasionally, homework in Science or
Social Studies is assigned.
FSupplemental
Curriculum
Third
grade students receive instruction in Spanish, art, music,
and physical education. They also visit the media center
as well as the computer lab.
#Art
Students
are exposed to elements of drawing, shading and color. Students
keep a portfolio of their work. They are exposed to varying
artistic styles and genres.
¯Music
Students
explore elements of Music such as meter signatures, read and play
whole, half, quarter, eighth and dotted notes, notation by sight and
sound, rhythmic patterns, phrases, melodic direction by notation.
In addition, students begin their study of the recorder through the
Recorder Karate program. Students are expected to implement
basic fingering and note reading for one octave.
¨Media
Students
spend time in the Media Center through conducting basic concepts of
titles, authors, subjects and research. Students can check out
books appropriate to their age level.
U
Physical
Education
Students are exposed to fitness assessments, traveling/locomotor
skills, Body management/Gymnastics/Dance, Soccer. Volleyball,
Football, Basketball, Track, T-ball and individual dual sports such
as Golf, Tennis, and Badminton are taught.
,Spanish
Students
explore elements of conversation through greetings, salutations,
colors, numbers, music, dance, and basic vocabulary. Directions,
physical descriptions, through both written communication, as well
as oral communication, are also taught.
:Technology
The
purpose of the technology laboratory is to integrate the use of
technology with the curriculum. In that light, students spend their
“lab time” with the assistance of the Technology Coordinator and
their classroom teacher. Basic elements of word processing,
graphing, research and simple publishing are explored.
