Second Grade CurriculumWReligion Students are taught the precepts of Catholicism. The belief in God, His Son and the Holy Spirit is taught. In addition, students are instructed in the Sacraments, Reconciliation and Eucharist. Students are instructed in the elements of the Mass as well as the liturgical calendar to include Advent, Christmas, Lent and Easter &Language ArtsMuch time is spent in teaching students to read fluently. Spelling, phonics, grammar and writing are integrated throughout the reading program. Manuscript review and cursive is taught within the handwriting curriculum. ¯Mathematics Concepts include basic addition and subtraction facts through 18, numbers through 1000, addition and subtraction of two-digit numbers, time, money, fractions, geometry, place value, thinking skills, and simple multiplication and division. þScience Study the characteristics of living things, energy and motion, changes over time, solids, liquids, and gases. In addition, themes such as “what makes me sick” and how living things interact are also explored. �Social Studies
Skills such as interpretation of maps, charts and timelines are
introduced. Students continue to explore the social sciences
through basic exploration of geography, economics, government, and
history.
Students have morning and lunch recesses. Students in the second grade have approximately 20 minutes of homework every day. In addition, daily practice of math facts and reading is essential for to reinforcement.

Supplemental Curriculum Students attend Mass weekly with the rest of the school. #Art Students are exposed to basic elements of drawing through shapes and colors. ¯Music Students explore elements of Music such as rhythm response, rhythm patterns and notations, melodic direction, song selection and playing instruments. ¨Media Students spend time in the Media Center through conducting basic concepts of titles, authors, and subjects. Students can check out books appropriate to their age level. UPhysical Education Students learn basic elements of physical fitness such as running, jumping, stretching and gross motor skills through eye hand coordination. ,Spanish Student learn elements of conversation through greetings, salutations, colors, numbers, music, dance, and basic vocabulary. Directions, physical descriptions and family members are also taught. :Technology
The purpose of the technology laboratory is to integrate the use of
technology with the curriculum. In that light, students spend their
“lab time” with the assistance of the Technology Coordinator and
their classroom teacher. Basic elements of word processing, and
simple publishing are explored.
